Northeast Minnesota Pre-Doctoral Internship Program

The Northeast MN pre-doctoral Psychology Internship Consortium is APPIC approved and is comprised of two internship sites; the University of Minnesota-Duluth Health Services Counseling Center and the Range Mental Health Center. Both sites are located in the Northeast corner of Minnesota, close to Lake Superior and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Four season recreational opportunities are widely available close to both sites.

The University of Minnesota-Duluth Health Services Counseling Center is located on the campus of UMD in Duluth, MN. It is a multi-disciplinary primary care clinic at the University of Minnesota-Duluth addressing medical, counseling and public health concerns of students. One intern is sited at this location. Duluth is a city of 85,000 with a surrounding area of about 150,000 people.

The Range Mental Health Center is located on Minnesota’s "Iron Range" about 60 miles north of Duluth. The Range Mental Health Center is a large comprehensive community mental health center offering individual, group and family therapies, psychological testing services, court ordered assessments, and medication treatment to a large and varied population in three sites and most of the schools on the Iron Range. The RMHC also provides residential and outpatient chemical dependency treatment, adult and child partial hospitalization services, crisis intervention and, in coordination with the Hibbing hospital, acute and long term inpatient psychiatric treatment. Two interns are sited at this location.  The Iron Range is a collection of numerous smaller cities. The population served by the Range Mental Health Center is about 80,000 to 100,000 people.

Both the Range Mental Health Center (RMHC) and the University of Minnesota-Duluth Health Services Counseling Center have been operating pre-doctoral internship programs since September of 1995. The consortium’s first full year began in 2006.

The goal of the Northeast MN Pre-Doctoral Internship Consortium is to train independent and competent psychologists able to assess and treat a wide variety of client needs within a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary agency. Each intern will spend 90% of his/her time at their primary site and 10% of their time at the other site.

Internship Specifics

The internship at RMHC will run from approximately September 1 until August 31. The stipend will be $17,000 plus health benefits and a 24 of days of Paid Time Off (PTO). There will be flexibility for the intern to design a program to emphasize a particular area of interest (e.g., adult or child focus). At RMHC, the intern will spend approximately 50% of his/her time providing outpatient services. The assignment to outpatient will run the entire year to allow the intern to develop a caseload; develop appropriate treatment plans and provide a complete course of psychotherapy services to a variety of individuals. The rest of the intern’s time will be spent in a series of three month rotations in the (1) Inpatient psychiatric unit, (2) Community Support Program, (3) Residential and Outpatient Chemical Dependency program and, (4) Adolescent and Child Day treatment services or Rehabilitation services or other available program depending on the intern’s interests.
